statement of reconciliation with indigenous australians

This statement is made by the Gay and Lesbian Welfare Association Inc in the interest of reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians. It was developed in 1999/2000 in response to a call from the Council of Aboriginal Reconciliation for organisations to support reconciliation. The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and other LGBT organisations also released similar statements around the same time

q21c

In 1999 and 2000 GLWA held symposiums entitled "Queer in the 21st Century" or "Q21C" as they became known.

The first Q21C symposium, entitled "Perspectives on assimilation and integration" explored how LGBTs and heterosexuals may co-exist within the same society, and what that co-existence might mean for the representation of LGBT peoples.

The presenters at the second Q21C symposium were asked to consider "challenges and responses to issues which affect us in the 21st Century". The challenge, as seen by the presenters, was to confront the inadequate ways in which LGBTs are represented, including those representations that render non-heterosexuals invisible.
